Pumpkin Obsession

I have been doing papermache halloween things. 22 pumpkins, 15 LARGE witch hats, lots of skulls...these two floor cloths, about 11 altered halloween books and about 15 graves. Some ghouls and a great pumpkin chair...which isn't finished. Here are some examples of what i have been doing...sorry about the quality. I will get around to taking some better pics soon. At 3 in the morning I am not about to obsess on getting great pics. I have made three dragons...which Paul wants me to take pics of so I have to get to clicking.

Memories of Mom

My Mom passed on Jan 26,2010. We are a close family and love each other a lot. My pain was deep and will probably always be just like the rest of my family.

To remember her by I have been experimenting in glass and made some lockets while I perfect my glass work. Here are some of the lockets. Not all of them tho. I already gave out a couple to my daughters. One I could not photograph because it is with one of them already. You can see a snip of my mom's hair on back of one. The Victorians use to do this. I didn't do it on two of them. Some people think it's kinda creepy

Halloween Reaper Swap

I signed up for a Post Halloween Reaper Swap. Sounded fun...and I was working with paper mache so I figured I would make cool coffin to ship it in. Now I am not so sure I can do that! i also made a paper mache witches hat that holds a pin/necklace that contains a drawing I did that is specific to the reaperee. I also put a hanging vampire bat in there that I bought. A blinking light too. Oh and a picture with the drawing.

5 minute ghost in three easy steps .....with stuff you probably already are tossing away.

Supplies for this ghost will be slightly different as I don't have another spring-bag laying around. The whole point is cheap but cool.

2 packages of cheese cloth (about 4 yards each)

Home depot is 3.67 but they will meet plus 10% our McCoys price plus 10% off. Our McCoys was 2.29.

string or ribbon to hang ghost

scissors for the cheese cloth

wire cutters

I have a green house so I can do the really messy work there....LOL You need to hang this while you are working on it. I have some metal plant hangers that I use to hang work from. You could use string even. What do you have laying around?

Step 1: Rinse and poke two holes in the bottom of the jug with a nail or the scissors. Don't stress on the size as the string will be what it hangs from; just make sure that you leave the middle between the two holes intact. This bottom will be the top of the ghosts head. I was frustrated and cut the handle to poke my hand thru so I could string it fast. Hint: Try to remove the label.

Step 2. Cut two wire hangers. I cut near the twisted part on one side to get maximum length. Use the nail again and and make a hole on either side of the spout of the jug. Thread the wire thru the holes then twist each side together. I curled the hook part of the hanger into a circle. In retrospect I wouldn't of made such a big circle. I use it to catch the edge of the cloth on for draping

Step 3. Drape the cheese cloth. I cut the first package in half. As you can see by this pic it isn't enough. I cut the second package in 1/3's. Don't stress. Maybe it was maybe it wasn't. It was just sort of. I used my hands to make a hole to string the cheese cloth over the ribbon hanger. You could use scissors if you want. Making a hole in the cheese cloth section makes it so you don't HAVE to glue stuff up. My idea was to drape it over the thing and when it is time to pack up halloween I toss the jug and hangers.

My other ghost had a bridge between the two arms made of a hanger. I didn't think this one needed it. I also dripped white paint mixed with glue and wall mud. I am not going to do that to this one. It started to rain and I needed to get back to the house. The puppies need their beauty sleep!

More papermache pumpkins and graves

Here is my 30 minute ghost. Hangers, an old spring type candy bag and two packages of cheese cloth...with some monster mud to hold it together. Total 6.00. I will add to it next year and make it a flying one! How cool would that be?

Ok...still working on stuff. I have a large box that I cut up into pumpkins. I painted those in the window after filling in the sides with spakling. I don't count the cost of that or the paint as I always have that on hand but if I did have to buy the paint it came to 2.00. The cat is a piece of tissue paper I cut into that shape. The monster cost me 29.00 at Walgreens tho. I already blew my budget of 20.00!

The stryo stuff was also from the box. I cut it up into shapes and quickly painted them. Cost zero...the bones are just rolled up newspaper that I papermached. Did 23 and it didn't take me long. I had the pumpkin so I am not counting that cost. Like I said...I don't count the paint but if you did a .50 bottle of white and black acrylic would be all you would need.

Here is a picture of my giant papermache spider. Left over box and coat hangers. Cost zero. It did take me three days and I haven't finished spider 2 which actually is a better looking spider. I would like to add spider led eyes but I just priced those at the shack and WOW. 15 for two leds and batteries. Gotta rethink that.

I should be finishing the othe spider and adding my festoons to the stairs to the porch but I bought some cheese cloth and am going to start me a ghost. THIS wont store well. Yickes. The other stuff will store flat.

Fall invigorates me

Its been a tough year. I lost to old age two of my dogs. I now have a new one...and Halloween is in the air. I have tried to resist the urge to decorate the haunt but alas...it's a no go.

I went went to Big Lots, wally world, all our dollar stores in a ten mile area and I could not find anything I wanted to buy. AND if I did I didn't want to pay the price they wanted....Plus there is the storage problem. SOOOO. Being green I was recycling and thought why not just STAY green. I am working on several things at once but they all are a papermache group. They will basically pack up for storage really flat. If they don't I will toss them.

It rained all day yesterday but I caught a break in the rain for a pic of the pod people. I have two large spiders that go between. I made 23 leg bones out of paper mache. Two pairs of creepy hands and about six styro grave stones. Just the basic shapes painted. IT IS GETTING WAY LATE. So my kitchen looks like a mess. I have a door decoration waiting to paint too. I will take pictures when I have it all out.

Art Dogs, Oily things and recycled glass

Well Jazz has been helping me again. She had the heart worms and so to keep her calm they gave her some tranquilizers. It really didn't slow her down much. There is a reason we call her Jazz the Spaz. That's drywall spackling on her side. Thank god it isn't paint! I am also working in my hall. I want to do an old faux technique for a long time.

I have been painting again. This time in oil. The first one here is an 8X10 and the rest are 16/24 I believe. They are more just playing I should say. I am experimenting on colors with oil paints. Concidering these are only the 5th and up paintings I have done in oil I kinda like them. The others are in a show down town San Antonio. I need to get down there and see if they are intsalled correctly.

This is a real place and the next one is if you look to your right. Notice the 8/10 above is also of this. I was just playing around with comp and colors.

I have been recycling glass. I have a lot more done besides these wind chimes and sun catchers. I sent a lot to people. They make the best sounds on a windy day!

You can also see two of my yard sculptures on that top shelve. They need one more coat of cement and they are done. I also have a big easter island one that is still in its armature state.

Christmas Day....

This year it was decided that we would buy an extra big roast beast so I would not have to cook turkey today. It really felt strange not cooking a big meal on Christmas day. I got to sleep late and for once really did! We did this so I could go to the zoo with Jessica and Paul this year. It was a blast! Here are the pics we took there. At the end are the pics that we took in the back yard that night while huddled around one of Pauls fires. Such a pyro! LOL

Christmas Decoration on a dime

It was a beautiful spring like day so I decided to dig up some involuntary sego palms. I had to clip and clip and clip to get to them. With the pile I had I felt bad I had to toss them away and my mulch pile is overflowing. So instead of tossing them I tied a bow around a bunch and sprayed them with Super 77 so I could add some glitter. Looked pretty good and I tied it to the gate feeling rather smart.

Since it looked pretty good I added some to the star on the side of the house. I liked that so I went to the garage and found these two large aluminum vases I have and didn't know what to do with. I stuffed some leaves in the back and added some bulbs and other odds and ends. I needed a focal point so I added some Santas I had made years and years ago.

So then I thought what the heck and hung some garland and wreaths i had....then I pulled out a beat up large wreath and added odds and ends.

Then I looked at what I had and added it to the walk coming up to my front door.

Egads...I couldn't stop!!! Swags and lights went next. Then I moved inside. Up one hall and down the other!! Thank goodness Paul came home and i had to stop and cook for him! But not before decorating one of the dogs.

I took advantage of the 70% off decoration sale and bought two 9.99 icicle lights and hung those around the windows yesterday...the urge still exists!

NUDE PROTEST!! I heard on the radio at there was going to be a nude protest...did you know it is not illegal for women to be topless in public in San Antonio? Who knew. Well. I joined in...only for a little while. Paul was too disappointed that the two young girls where not going to strip. Oh well. Did I? What do you think? Personally I don't like peta becuase they sent Andria a birthday card when she was eight with a skinned rabbit. This to a little girl who raised rabbits!!!! The idea they have is fine but dang. Shock and awe doesn't work. Even Bush realises this now!

PINK MONSTER VANISHES!!!!!

Ok....I have been sniffing paint again. I hated this worn out pink bath. So I bought some self etching car paint in a can (CHEAPER AND BETTER THAN THAT STUFF AT THE BOX STORES) and MOST IMPORTANT a very very expensive gas mask looking thing and sprayed the heck out of the tile. Then I added white. I left the small detail of the tile and taped over the tp holder and soap holder etc. I didn't do the bath tub but I added a surprise on the wall there. Took all of 15 minutes.

So how much did it cost? 1500! It shouldn't of cost that but of course when you remodel you always run into things and 1058.00 of it was just for the plumber to fix the old elbow thingy that goes to the waste plant. I think it may be why Jessica and I where always getting headaches and things and well I haven't had one since this thing got fixed. It was just a toliet sitting over a hole sort of going into the pipe. YICKES> Then my 99.00 sink got replaced with 380.00 sink and my Graigs list toilet got replaced with a one Paul bought at home depot three times because he kept breaking them when he got home! Oh well. It is done. The red seat is a box I built and upholstered and painted. I dumpster dived for the legs a long long time ago. It is a seat AND a clothes hamper. Yeah...I know none of the sides match. I didn't have anything in mind so what the heck. Whats cool about this next pic is you can see some of the toile fabric and how I spiffed up the plain plywood doors. I added some old chair rail I had in the green house and two oval things...I don't know what they are are but I put them on there. Both were broken but I defy anyone to tell just which pieces where missing. See those two HUGE knobs? Those are old door knobs. I have carried those things around from house to house for probably twenty years. I FINALLY used them. I used my dremel to cut off the end of a 2 inch screw that had a nut that fit. I then used some two part epoxy and turned them into knobs. How funny huh? Didn't cost a dang thing. Speaking of not costing much. I bought the yellow paint for 5.00 (oops paint) and was going to mix it to make a color I wanted for my hall way. The rugs I got for 70% off because Mervins is going out of business (how sad). I got the black tassels on the edge of my curtains at a garage sale and the 1.00 a yard toile I bought about six years ago (it is upholstery weight too!) Of course in Dallas there are tons of places you can haunt to get bolts of fabric for .25 to 1.00 a yard. If there is one in San Antonio I haven't found it yet.

So you can see that if I didn't have the expense of the plumber and sink things really would be cheap. One other suggestion. You can buy paint at places like Big Lots for 8.00 or 9.00 a gallon but only use those IF you mix it with a better paint. The coverage stinks. I use it for tonal control and a slight volume increase. I had great white paint on hand. I also silver gilded the mirror to match the mirror I did for the door. ThAT tape over that LARGE mirror on the wall IS NOW OFF BUT THE MIRROR covers the area that we ripped the old counter out that couldn't be tiled nicely because tiles DO change sizes.... after 30 years they are not using the same molds LOL. Oh...the BEST THING IS I GOT A NEW TOOL. I did add this into the total for the room. The piece behind the sink is not marble like the sink top. It is FAUX. People think it is! I used my NEW HAND HELD ROUTER....which is MUCH better than the two handed one I have and could not control. What really makes it look like that marble is i used that really thick bar resin and flicked in silver mica dust. NO...the paintings are not mine. Jessica bought them years ago. I highly recommend getting a hand held router. I did all that free hand and when I checked to see if it was symmetrical it was! I love that thing.

Speaking of pictures ......my four dogs I have painted I have to list. They are xmas presents for someone one (s) and I have two more and I haven't the foggest just what the hell the other two are suppose to be. So I am adding them here so my "client" can let me know what the heck the others are suppose to be! AND REMEMBER ONLY ONE DOG PER 9X12. The instructions I have say: Black face -tan one - all black one. Number six says" pug tan black together.

Ok....lets see...besides having a dead computer off and on for several months I also decided to take an inventory of things that I have an excess of. This is an interesting exercise that allowed me to make some pretty interesting xmas decorations. One of them are sego palm leaves. I am trying to dig out a "big baby" from under one of my really large ones and thus came up with some decorative stuff. Little supper 77 and old left over glitter and viola. Here are some pics...i DID a lot more of them but got bored taking pics. Sorry.

I have not been posting because I have been ultra busy then I find out that someone created programs to spam bloggs! That they are not even real people creating them but computers! Go figure.

I watched a program on hippies tonight and they suggested that the womens movement and civil rights movement and the ability to come out of the closet can be attributed to the hippy legacy....I suppose the money hungry industrialists mentality can be attributed to polluting the web. I suppose this makes me a hippie at heart but that sort of stuff is down right evil. I bet a million that they don't even recycle....who the heck doesn't recycle these days? Only evil people...oh...and tulsa oklahoma...

They recycle BUT you have to pay the city to recycle!

What I have been doing or decorating for desperate dames!

I have waited around long enough for hubby to start with removing the paneling and doing the walls. He kept saying he liked the paneling. It looked cheap and tacky but really hip in 1958. I did the entire library for under 125. This includes all furniture and painting and flooring. Here is the flooring as it dried and before I polyurethaned it. It isn't put together in these pics but I obviously don't have a problem with concrete moisture. I put a rope light in the bookcase. Recovered the chairs like that one...and painted the wood on them. It doesn't show in this pic. I will take some "finished" and cluttered again pictures...after the poker game the boys played on the table. On the table i primed and pained. Glued down black felt and dotted around the edges with a gold marker. The lights are crystal chandlers which where in pieces and so dirty most people would not of touched them. Hubby did clean two of the four I had to do. I also did the tv room. Same deal with paneling there too.

I have not been online except to quickly check my email. I have been working around the house and creating a lot. I painted my kitchen table to match the hutch and found a top to my dresser turned hutch. I also painted that to match. How cute huh? Well you would say that IF my digital camera worked! I have to go get a new one. Hope someone has a great sale this weekend.

I did borrow my daughters camera and took a few pics of jewelry I have been making. This is ONLY a small sample of what I have made. I will put it on my web site. For sale. Etsy too I suppose.

I joined SAVA. San Antonio Visual Artist group. It is a great group. Our president is awesome. She has really moved this group along.

Well. I also have been clearing out my work room. NO small task. I am turning it into a poker/library/office room. Another big time project. I have the paint but I still don't have every thing out of there. Most of what is left are those dang socks. I need to at least try to sell some. THEY are GREAT SOCKS! I have the pocker table but I have to refinish it. it actually is plastic and Paul poked a big hole in the top. So I will have to REPAIR THAT TOO. Oh well. I must be very wicked as there is never rest for me!

I also have been doing more research/learning. I have one other "art" form I want to try out before I have to REALLY start produfing a lot of items. I will keep you posted on when I have it down. Right now I am just thinking what would be the most cost effective way to do it. I could spend in the thousands just to attempt it because the equipment is so expensive. I am talking about 10K. Since I don't have it now I can't very well do that. SO...my little thinking cap is snuggly on.,

Ok...I admit I TIVO her everyday. I delete the shows with cooking tho. I taught myself that sort of stuff back in Jr High. Really!

I just wish she was older. I sure could of used her when I had to teach myself how to make balloon sculptures for a girl scout troop event when the kiddos where doing the scout thing. THAT has to be the hardest thing to teach yourself.

I brought my camera...ya never know WHAT you can take a picture of. Thats me with J. Perkins to PROVE to Jessica (daughter)I went. She says I am agrophobic...and she might be a tad right. I would much rather stay home and work on art than anything in the world. Since I can...I do!

Back to the STICH event.

I also got my hair done! Isn't that COOL? It really looked awesome from the back. There was such wonderful things there. I recommend it to the hip or stylish young chicks and to COOL Hens like me.

Well. How come I took a picture of her shoes? I didn't do it on purpose....my camera was dropping and it when off when I caught it. THATS A CONCRET FLOOR THERE! I just happened to get a picture of her fab shoes. Oh...to be able to wear fab shoes again. Hurts my feet to even THINK about wearing those shoes. You can't get me out of paint covered tennyboots anyway.

Paper Beads..

I was LATE with a swap for paper beads. I hate being late. REALLY hate it. So to start I asked myself:

What makes a bead?

Most paper beads are the rolled up type. I always like to think outside the box. Usually gets me in trouble but still I do. So I "folded" mine not rolled them. I also tried a few that were two flat sides put together with technique papers...didn't like those at all so I went with these. OH...I also tried papermache ones but those wont dry fast enough. Made soft of big beads. It took me ALL DAY TODAY and I still have to package them. YICKES!

Hope people like them at least. I also tried different techs on them. They don't burn well. I did cut outs then filled them with UTE. Hung the cutout on it like a bead. I added wire to most. That was fun and added to it. Micro glitter and of course that powdered stuff. Love that stuff but I can't think of the name of it right now. Love it tho.

More purses...and using the dremel

Ok...so I am so purse oriented lately but I can't seem to stop it. Tonight I have another easy to make pattern in my head. Actually two. I am to tired to do anything but sketch it. Tommorrow. Today I worked on wooden cigar type boxes and some straw purses and one childs shirt. I have 9 cigar boxes going. The are so FUNNY. The one I am going to show is carving with my dremel. I belong to the dremel group and thought it time I show some work. I am taking pics in progress. It is being layered with paints and crackle glazes to antique it but eventually the main color will be a black purse. Don't let the colors throw you off. It is for subtel colorings. What is being shown here is the horse being carved into the front using the dremel and the bit.

Ok...I took a break from adding all those art purses to my web site. Since I haven't updated it in 1 YEAR and 4 MONTHS I guess it is about time. I only have about 50 more to upload.

My pal Maria and I are thinking about starting a group that is for just CREATING. Not bogged down with only one technique or style. This should distract me a bit from working on the web site. LOL. So I have to post SOME pic of what I am working on so I am going to post some scans and chaulkings I am working on. Other than I like them I really don't know WHAT I will do with them. I have about 15 of them done. Another six to do...which I do while I wait for the computer to catch up with. (I DIDN'T MEAN IT COMPUTER GODS >>>PLEASE DO NOT BURB AGAIN).

Well my computer has been ill so I haven't been able to use the computer. Of course you know that not blogging doesn't mean I haven't done anything. Today during the game I got to meet face to face ...Maria! Another purse nut like me. What a delight she is. I showed her all I have been doing...INCLUDING the messes!

One of hubbies pals and his daughter Christi came over. She is so cute! She is in 9th grade and wants to create too! Since neither of my daughters create it is so NICE to have someone I can pass on all I have learned over the years. Someone who is interested! Hopefully I did not over whelm her. I can be pretty intense when i create.

Anyway Christi brought over a pair of pants and we pimped them out. Are they not the coolest! I am going to make me a pair too. The brown, lime green and purple are so nice together. I was hesitant about the purple but Christi had great instincts on it! The butterflies really add to it too.

I made a heck of a mess this week. Did that dresser, stool and thing over the fridge. Made new curtains for Jessica while she was away at an Arabian horse show. Took almost 40 yards and i made me a purse out of some scraps. To match that big pattern on that material there where several pieces big enough to make a good size purse. In fact I plan on changing it alittle and making another.

Jazz is at it again! Mondays I normally clean (yeah right). Well hubby was home so we just relaxed...so today I was going to clean. Jazz decided we didn't need to do this and actually grabbed my shirt and tried to pull me into the kitchen to work on stuff like we usually do. She is SOOOO funny. I have never had a dog like her. Short haired german pointer. ...but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

She unstuffed the retrieve teddy bear we toss about and went and dug it out of the trash and hid it...or thought she did. She only has a box full of these things but hey...that was her fav.

I did do a gesso wash over the background. Interesting effect. I am not sure I like it better...as i hated it from the get go. WHY OH WHY did I waste my time. Maybe if I did over the butterflies and then painted flowers over that? Maybe or MAYBE...and I am thinking I am liking this compose a poem and write it over it. yeah...that is where I am going with this I think.

Tuesday I painted seven wooden heart boxes I got for 90% off. I thought while I am at it why not the 90% off star cardboard boxes I have and then of course there is the three wooden purses I need to do and the thing I bought to hang on the wall to put my paint brushes in for 1.91.... SO. I spent the day priming, base painting, and then doing effects or techniques on the boxes. Some I painted about SIX times at least to get the technique in. And now it is Wed and I need to go get some sealer becuase i am done with them all except one and need to seal them. So technically I guess I am not done but egads it has been a lot of work. After I get back and spray them (in the Texas heat it takes no time to dry) I will take pics.

Mondays are cleaning days

I don't know WHY I did them. They have been a bane to my exsistance lately. No church this morning. Everyone is slow moving so I am taking the day as a total day of rest....IF IT WERE NOT FOR THESE THINGS! Each is an 8X10 but I combined them to get it in one pic.

Did Madonna last night in prep for watching a video on Chinese brush masters. We will see what i learn and apply.

Those STUPID butterfly ladies are giving me fits. For SOME reason I stamped music notes behind them. Now I am stumped. Good or bad I gotta finish them and I am STUMPED. They look HORRIBLE. THINK THINK THINK. Well Off to do dishes, cook desert, and perhaps make some pizza dough.

Didn't do much last night. I did paint my truck tire pink/gold and run over my jeans. Then crocheted up the leg of it. I don't think I am done altering these but they are getting cool.

Mailed out some secret pal stuff and my tip ins. I recycle boxes by painting on them and glueing things to them. The postal people enjoy them.

STARTED this and six butterfly lady paintings. She is slow going. NOT anywhere done but sorta blocked in.

This is one of my pig paintings in the series...Pigs don't just fly. These are for tshirts I will be selling.

I need a name for him. How about Admiral Smithfield? PLEASE post some suggestions.

Like i said I didn't do much today or last night.

Free Form Crochet

This is Jazimin the Yarn Eating Dog. My Art Buddy. Here she is creating. She obviously has learned being a mess from the "master". LOL

I did this last night while watching Survivorman. It isn't crochet but bought for .80 cents then woven. Yuck. I am thinking of using netting and do-dads and encasing it in it. Right now I am just not liking it.

This is actually freeform as I know it. Not much on it but I never count and the fringe at the edge is just formed into it. I was going to add flowers but now I am just going to make a large pin for it.

This is one of my free form purses in progress (this one is LARGE). You can't really see the dangly balls on it and the spirals are ready to be attached once the background is done. I work on this about an hour each night. It takes for ever. No wonder these things are so expensive!

This is all I worked on last night while watching tv. Not much I know. But at least I did not make a mess like my DOG JAZ the SPAZ.

This is the front of the book. Made to look like textured leather.

The books Title is "All I have..." This page is "seen". Notice under the sun and the cut out moon in the lower right. The Cobwebs are not in the brain but earrings.

all that I have "Loved". Note what is in her hand and under her heal. The chain of copper I made. I have made a series of jewelry that go with this design.

All that I have "dreampt". The copper star on the right moves around. It is evoking underwater and stary nights.

All that I have "overcome". This page of poppies is a Wizard of Oz reference. At the top of the page is a quote from W. Witch. On the left it says poppies...sweet poppies.

I carved a large wooden stamp for this one. It is on a pert chart.
